Lateral movement is the stage of a cyberattack in which an attacker who has already gained access to one system attempts to reach additional systems, accounts, applications, or resources within the same environment. Initial access is often only the beginning of a larger attack. Once an attacker establishes a foothold, the objective may shift from compromising a single device to understanding and navigating the broader environment. An attacker may attempt to identify additional systems, determine which accounts have greater privileges, locate important resources, and move toward systems that provide greater access or business impact. This is why lateral movement is particularly important for enterprise security teams.
