Privilege Escalation Explained (2026) What Is Privilege Escalation? Privilege escalation is a cybersecurity technique in which an attacker attempts to obtain access rights or permissions that are higher than those originally available to them. In a compromised environment, an attacker may initially gain access through an ordinary user account, application, endpoint, or other limited entry point. That access may not be enough to reach sensitive systems or perform high-impact actions. The attacker may therefore attempt to increase their level of access. This is where privilege escalation becomes important. Instead of remaining limited to the permissions of the initial foothold, the attacker attempts to reach a more powerful level of access, potentially including administrative or other highly privileged capabilities.
